Best Over-Ear Headphones

In contrast to earbuds, headphones over-ear encapsulate your ears completely and allow for bigger drivers to deliver more bass and a wider soundstage. A majority of them feature Bluetooth technology and active noise cancellation.

The Master & Dynamic MW65 is updated with better audio and numerous ANC modes, and a long battery life.

1. Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless

Sony has upgraded an already great pair of headphones by introducing the WH1000XM4 wireless Headphones bluetooth headphones (akvalife.by). They are lighter, better built and have an audio profile that is more balanced (though they are bass heavy). They also include an app for audio customization. Their active noise cancellation works better than it did before, removing more ambient sound, and they have a longer battery life than a lot of competitors.

These headphones are Bluetooth 5.0 compatible and Sony LDAC is also compatible with. The latter can transfer high-resolution audio however, you'll need compatible equipment and streaming service. The WH-1000XM4s also allows you to connect two Bluetooth devices at the same time and automatically switch between them when required. You can enable this feature via the Sony Headphones Connect app and it is extremely effective.

The touch panels are more sensitive than the XM3. They respond quicker to a tap on panels and are simpler to control when making a call or listening to music. Sony has added a feature to make voices more clear and precise during calls. This is an obvious and a nice addition.

While the WH-1000XM4s aren't perfect, they're one of the most comfortable wireless headphones we've tested. They're comfortable, feel well-made, and come with an outstanding battery that lasts for more than 30 hours continuously. They can be used passively with a TRS cable. This is ideal for travel or preserving power.

The WH-1000XM4s make a better choice than the Bowers & Wilkins Px7 S2 Wireless over-ears. The Sonys are more comfy, and their ANC is able to block out more ambient sound. The B&Ws feature an EQ that is more flexible, as well as an app companion to adjust the audio quality. However, the B&Ws come with more robust design and they can connect with two Bluetooth devices simultaneously. They also support aptX HD and feature an AI-driven engine that is attempting to boost compressed music to high-resolution. This is known as DSEE Extreme and it does an excellent job of improving the clarity of music, especially when listening to lossless files.

2. Bose QuietComfort 45/QC45 Wireless

The $329 Bose QuietComfort 45 noise-canceling headphones are the most recent version of a headset that has become a standard for commuters as well as passengers around the world. Rather than reinventing the wheel, the new model retains the same formula that made the predecessor so popular, wireless headphones bluetooth headphones but adds the USB-C port, which is better at cancelling noise and longer battery life.

These over-ear Bose headsets have a premium feeling and appearance, similar to the QC 35 II headphones that came before them. The headband, wireless Headphones bluetooth Headphones which is made of plastic, provides a solid feel thanks to the hinges made of metal at pivot points. They also have the familiar ratcheting mechanism whenever you expand or retract your ear cups. The cups are cushioned and have soft pads that are comfortable to wear over your ears without pressing your head. When folded they weigh 238g. They can be worn with a coat or sweater as they work even when they are not on the head.

Despite their reputation for comfort, the QC45s do not offer the best sound in this price range. The frequencies are comparatively flat and lack the details that more expensive headphones might be able to bring out. The higher registers tend to be amplified, which is fine for most music, but could be a problem for delicate or intricate genres of music. The bass is decent, but lacks punch.

One feature that's missing is the ability to pause playback whenever you remove the headset. This is a standard in this price range and is something that Bose's competitors have long offered. Another oversight is the absence of an in-app EQ. Bose has preset EQs in the app, but it would be nice to have an option to control the EQ manually.

Bluetooth 5.0 is supported, including multipoint and more advanced codecs such as aptX Adaptive. You can download the Bose Audio app to adjust your headset's audio and voice assistant settings.

The QC45s also include four in-built microphones to hear your voice when you make calls. The call quality is generally excellent however, the headphones don't have the nifty capability to muffle your voice during playback, which is a feature that other wireless headphones do. Update: As of February 2022, a firmware upgrade to the QC45s gave you manual EQ options in the audio app, which is a welcome improvement.

3. Focal Bathys Wireless

Focal is a French audio brand that is known for high-performance headphones that provide long-lasting comfort and a design that lets listeners know they're listening to something truly special. Their first venture into wireless headphones that block noise, the Bathys are a stunning set of headphones that sound and look great. They have a high-performance USB DAC built in, which means you can use them both for wired and wireless listening.

The Bathys are very efficient in terms of battery life, with Focal claiming 30 hours of continuous Bluetooth playtime. We actually got a little more from them with more than 40 hours on average of one charge. If you need to charge the headphones then the indicator light on the right earcup will turn red.

They offer a good amount of features for headphones of this price point with support for multiple devices at the same time and automatic pairing (though you'll have to select the source device every time you want to listen). The headphones have an inbuilt microphone that can be used with voice assistants such as Siri or Alexa. The headphones also feature an easy-to-use interface, making it simple to control your music as well as make calls.

Bathys over-ear headphones are able to perform in our noise cancellation test, reducing ambient sound by 9 decibels on average. It's not as effective as the ANC found in the Sony WH1000XM4 and Bose QuietComfort45/QC45 Wireless but it is still effective.

The Bathys headphones did well in our headphone tests. Their frequency response was largely similar to the headphone curve of SoundGuys with minor differences in the mids and bass. They have a bass-rich sound profile that adds a lot of boom to the mix, however, it can make instruments and vocals like cymbals seem a bit veiled.

You can wear them anywhere and not worry about whether others hear your music. The microphone has a decent recording quality via Bluetooth with only slight distortion in the mid to high treble frequency range.

4. Sennheiser Momentum 4

The Sennheiser Momentum buy wireless headphones is a new version of the company's top Bluetooth headsets. The Momentum 3 was a solid, but not spectacular entry in this category. The new model is a significant improvement over the previous generation, with more sleek design, better gesture control and an enormous battery life.

Many of the improvements here are subtle but they add up to make a pair that feel like an upgrade to the previous model. The Momentum 4s are flat and do not fold. They come with an outer case that protects them when on the move. The Momentum 4s are also device-agnostic, like many other Bluetooth headphones from recent years, such as those from Bowers & Wilkins and Sony. This means they work with both Android phones and Apple iPhones, however they don't have the extra features (like Find My support and head-tracked Spatial Audio) that are available on the AirPods.

The most obvious difference in this model is the huge battery, which claims up to 60 hours of playback when the noise cancellation feature turned on. This is easily twice the amount of the other brands and enough to take a multi-day journey without worrying about finding an outlet.

Billy Steele, senior editor at Engadget and Engadget, gave the headphones an 82 percent score. He highlighted their audio quality and ANC features as strengths. He only has one complaint: they lack a sense gravitas in the mids and the treble. This means that orchestral music sounds dull instead of grand. The bass is well rounded but it can sound too loud, which can cause to fatigue when songs have strong bass lines, such as the drum hits in As I Lay Dying’s Forever. The cymbals can sound smoky rather than full, and there's no real feeling of depth in the lows.

The Momentum 4s are not designed to place pressure on your neck or ears. However they can be a bit difficult to wear around the house or during longer listening sessions. They will move about on your head, causing intense head movements. This can cause them to unexpectedly wake up which can be distracting during calls or music. They shut down automatically after 15 minutes and can be switched off manually by pressing the power button.
