How to Replace Window Panes

Begin by removing any broken pieces of glass. This is best done using pliers, but a flathead screwdriver can also be effective in the pinch. Use a wood chisel, or putty knife to get rid of any remaining old putty around the frame and window sash. Be careful not to break the window sash. Take your time and work slowly. It is recommended to do this using a sturdy ladder rather than on the ground and have someone standing below the sash to help hold it in place.

Once you have removed all of the old putty, it is time to prepare the window frame to fit the new pane. Find the width and the height of the opening in the sash, subtracting 1/8 inch from each measurement (to allow for seasonal expansion and contraction). These measurements can be sent to a hardware or home center store to have an item cut from glass that is in stock to the correct size. Alternately, you can cut the glass yourself if have the tools you need.

After putting in the new pane, run a small bead of caulking along the edge to seal it against weather. Then, you can install a glazier's pointing on the frame's opposite side to secure the pane into the right place. The points should not be too tight that they cause friction between the frame and the sash however they should not be loose.

Before applying the putty to the surface, knead thoroughly until it becomes soft and free from lumps. Make it into pencil-sized strips. The first strip should be glued to the frame's corner. Work from corner to corner, making sure it is even and smooth.

Glazier's Points

The glazier's points are small triangular metal pieces which help to secure the glass to the frame without causing damage to the delicate surface. It's simple to learn how to use this nefarious tool, and you'll be able to save money on the cost of a professional installation.

The glass is held in place using tiny metal clips known as a glazier's point and putty, which is often called glazing compound. Remove the old pane and clean the area with the rag, a pull-type scraper or wood chisel. Wear safety glasses and gloves while you do this work. You'll need a heating gun in the event that the window is glued into the frame.

If you are planning to replace the original sash, take off the molding that supports the old pane. Sand the sash until it's flat and ready to receive new caulk. If necessary you want to tap your glass lightly into the rabbet with your thumb.

If the new pane has cracked, you can use the silicone caulk or glass glue that is based on solvents to cover the crack prior to pressing it in the sash. Otherwise, you'll need to putty over the crack to create an impervious seal to keep water out. After the putty is dry, clean the oily film off the glass with a rag and allow it to dry completely prior to painting. Paint before the putty has completely dried. It won't form a good seal and may leak or discolor with time.

Paint

If you've had a broken window pane, you may be worried about the cost of replacing it. It's true that replacing a single piece of glass doesn't need to be expensive if you do it on your own.
