Soundcore Life Q30

A major upgrade over the Soundcore Life 2 from late-2018 The new over-ears appear better, feel stronger and generally feel more polished. They're still mostly made of plastic, but the hinges are tighter and the soft leather ear cups are a bit larger. You can also switch the 3.5mm cable for a high-quality USB-C model to use them with portable Hi-Fi systems as well as stationary Hi-Res players. They also come with dual microphones that work well in our tests for FaceTime, Skype, and Microsoft Teams calls.

The Soundcore app has a wide variety of EQ presets that can be saved and altered to play podcasts and music in the way you like. This is what sets these headphones apart from most other ANC headphones and the Soundcore app is extremely easy to use.

When ANC is on, the Q30's 40mm drivers cut out almost all background noise, making for very pleasant listening. The Q30's sound signature is natural, but a little on treble. Some may not be a fan of the bass response (we had better results using the Bass Booster equalizer). It is possible to fix this with the Soundcore App, which comes with an 8-band Equalizer.

The headphones feature the power button and a pairing button on the left ear cup and an USB-C port to charge. The right earcup features buttons for volume up/down, play/pause and volume up/down. Double-clicking on these controls allows you to skip tracks or repeat previous ones. You can also make use of voice commands to instruct them to switch modes or set alarms. You can also cover the right earcup with your hand to activate ambient modes so that you can hear everything around you without taking off the headphones.

These headphones have a fantastic battery life. In our tests with ANC turned on, the Q30 was able to last for nearly an hour longer than the other headphones. This leaves plenty of time for long flights or a day at the office. They can be charged quickly with the included USB-C cable and you'll be able to see a warning when they're approaching empty.

Focal Bathys Wireless

Focal's Bathys Wireless is a pair of powerful over-ear Bluetooth headphones that offer active noise cancellation as well as Bluetooth playback. These headphones are designed to be premium, high-end headphones that can be used at home or on the go. The headphones are a little bit more expensive than similar headphones, but their exceptional sound quality is what makes them stand out.

The Focal Bathys come in a compact, slim and attractive fabric-finished white retail box that includes everything you need inside. There's also a fold-flat carry case for the headphones and a USB-C cable to USB C cable, 1.2mmSE cable and an audio converter.

The battery's 600mAh capacity can last a whole day of casual listening. They also come with an audio input that you can use wired. When they're wirelessly connected, they're connected via Bluetooth and you can control their functions through an app (now called Focal and Naim, probably in the same vein as their English Naim brand's products for audio that are network-aware) or via the button located on the left earcup that allows you to switch between ANC profiles like'soft','silent transparent', and full.

The app lets you modify various settings, including the brightness of the LEDs, the EQ presets (including a'music' profile that sounds more neutral and brighter than other profiles) and the battery life. You can also select the ANC mode and level and select an 'acoustic environment setting to alter the sensitivity in order to simulate the sound of the headphones in a different room.

The Focal Bathys come with a bass-rich sound profile that adds more warmth and punch to your most loved tracks. The result is that instruments and vocals be muted, and certain elements like cymbals could be less noticeable than on other Headphones bluetooth. They're not as efficient in active noise cancellation contrasted to other headphones with more advanced technology, like the Sony WH-1000XM5 or Apple AirPods Max.

Sony WH-1000XM5

Sony has a stellar reputation for its headphones and the WH-1000XM5 is no exception. It's located at the top end of the mainstream over-ear headphone market, edging into the luxury lifestyle sector where brands like Bang & Olufsen, Apple and Montblanc are a common sight. The XM5s are expensive in cost, but if you can afford it, there are few more superior wireless over-ear headphones out there.

The XM5s come with a variety of features that make life easier for the listener and automate some tasks that they'd otherwise have to do manually. Sony's DSEE Extreme engine (which upscales compressed music to close to high-res) is also included, as is support for Bluetooth's LDAC technology. This lets high-quality audio be streamed with bitrates that are higher than Bluetooth. There's even a built-in microphone to allow making hands-free calls.

The XM5 headphones aren't any different from the previous generation of WH headphones in terms of noise cancellation. They are among the top in eliminating the constant drones that are heard in subway and train carriages. The XM5s do an excellent job of separating listeners from traffic noises of airports and busy streets, too.

The sound quality is also very good. The XM5s don't have as many details in the low-frequency range as the XM4, but they do have a greater sense clarity and openness. The bass in Rage Against the Machine's Bullet in the Head shows the Sonys power and clarity but without affecting the rest the music. The XM5s are also able to deliver precise and tight bass notes on Massive Attack's Angel.

The battery life is fantastic and can last up to 30 hours of listening time when ANC is active and up to 40 hours when it's off. This is enough to cover a weekend getaway or headphones bluetooth several days of heavy usage.

The only issue is that the XM5s do not have any dust or water resistance protection. In fact, Sony recommends that you not sweat on them or take them out in the rain. This might not be a problem for some people, but it could cause a problem for those who spend a lot of time in the gym or lives in a city that is rainy.

Apple AirPods Max

Apple AirPods Max is a pair of wireless headphones over-ear that feature Bluetooth technology and noise cancellation. They feature 40mm dynamic drivers that are designed by Apple and have a a neutral audio profile that emphasizes the mids and highs while not going too loud on either ends of the spectrum. This makes them perfect for both movies and music. They also have higher fidelity than most competing pairs of headphones.

The headphones are lightweight and feel comfortable on the head. The ear cups are made of memory foam and covered with woven fabric, and they sit comfortably on the ears without pressing on the sides of the face. The earcups can also tilt and rotate to accommodate different head shapes. The spring-loaded hinges feature a strong but not too robust clamping force that ensures that the earcups remain in place during listening sessions.

A small button located on the the right earcup lets you toggle noise cancelling modes. It also has the jog dial that is a push-button like the digital Crown on the Apple Watch. You can turn it to control the volume and press it one three, twice, or even three times for playback controls. Siri can be activated by pressing and holding the button. The buttons are simple to use and well-placed however, I would like to see a power button that would turn off the headphones when not in use. The headphones go into standby mode when removed from your ears, or when placed in their case. They come back to life when you put them on your head.

Another great feature is spatial audio, which uses the gyroscopes and accelerometers in the AirPods Max and your iPhone or iPad to determine the direction you're going, and then repositions the sound to make it seem like they're coming from those locations. This creates an immersive theater experience for videos and movies recorded in 5.1, 7.1 or Dolby Atmos. Only iOS devices can be used to listen to the spatial audio.

The AirPods Max is a decent pair, but I would feel a little ripped off for spending $549 at an Apple Store knowing that the second-generation model would be better within a year. AirPods Pro are more expensive, but they have superior battery life and more advanced features.
