How to Fix a Key Fob That isn't Working

If your key fob does not work then you can fix it by following just a few steps. The first step is to be sure that it's not the backup remote.

If the backup remote key repair is able to lock and unlock your car doors it is most likely an issue with the primary remote. The majority of repair car key remote key malfunctions result from circuitry or battery issues.

Battery

It is not uncommon for the battery in the key fob for cars to get worn out. It is fairly easy to change out the battery, however it is crucial to ensure you use the right type and you can consult your owner's manual, or contact the dealer for the manufacturer to determine the type of battery you need. It is also a good idea to examine the battery compartment thoroughly, as dead batteries sometimes leak caustic chemicals that can damage the remote. If replacing the batteries doesn't solve the issue it could be that there are other issues that require professional attention. For example, if buttons seem stuck or broken, it may be necessary to take the remote apart and rework its components. You could also try reprogramming the vehicle to recognize the new key fob.

Buttons

Through repeated use, key fobs can get dirty and worn. It is not unusual for buttons to stop functioning, or require a hefty press to make them work. This can be a hassle particularly when you're away from your home and need to start your car key fob repairs. Fortunately, even worn-out or damaged buttons can be fixed with a bit of time and a few items you might already have in the home.

First, make sure that the batteries are properly placed and that the indentation at the back of the button has been filled. Open the remote carefully and inspect the circuit board. Examine for evidence of rust, or other indications that the buttons have been damaged or worn. For instance there could be conductive paint missing. Use a Q-tip that has been dipped in rubbing alcohol to gently clean any membrane contact that is worn-out or where to repair car key remote conductive painting is missing. Be careful not to rub too hard, as this can erode the conductive painting and prevent the button firing when pressed.

Programming

Key fobs are subject to many abuses and aren't impervious to damage. They may lose their connection with the receiver in your vehicle because of shocks or a low battery, which calls for changing the program.
